Superfoods can go a long way in helping you look and feel healthier and more energized. They help to kickstart your system and have many different benefits. When they are high in antioxidants, they are considered a superfood. Here are three superfoods that you should be eating.
Artichokes – This green veggie is often bypassed in the store, but it contains the most antioxidants of any other vegetable according to the USDA. The two main antioxidants that it contains are silymarin and cynarin. These help to improve your liver health. Artichokes only have 25 calories and no fat per serving. They also serve up 170mg of potassium. They are high in magnesium, Vitamin C, fiber, and folate.
To cook, remove the tough outer petals and cut off the stems. Rinse well. Steam or place them standing in a pot to simmer for 30-40 minutes. Hold the tip of the leaves and eat the fleshy part and scoop out the ‘hairy’ part to get to the heart.
Figs – Spring means fresh figs. Dried figs are usually found year round, but they are best when fresh. Figs have a high level of potassium as well as all of the vitamins and minerals of most other fruits. They also contain B6, fiber, calcium, and iron. The insoluble fiber can help to protect against colon cancer while the soluble fiber can help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
These can be eaten as is with no cooking, or you can add them to a baking recipe.
Ramps – Ramps are also known as spring onions that are only in season from April to June. They resemble scallions and give your food a garlic-onion flavoring. Ramps contain flavonoids, sulfur-containing compounds, and selenium. The body needs a small amount of selenium which helps to prevent certain cancers and cardiovascular disease.
Ramps can be used in your food when you would normally use garlic.
