Ruben Studdard is best known as being the winner of the second season of American Idol. He has released five studio albums since 2002 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal in December of 2003. He is also known for being a pretty big guy. Now he is on the Biggest Loser and is determined to become healthy.
When he first came to the show Studdard weighed in at 462 pounds. Now a few weeks later he is already down to 431 pounds. Unfortunately the doctor on the show, Dr. Robert Huizenga, gave Ruben some bad news. His insulin and sugar levels were extremely high. The doctor diagnosed him with Type 2 Diabetes. The 35 year old singer told his coach that he was afraid. He said that he had seen many lives cut short by this disease. He has worked hard to have a singing career and he doesn’t want it all to be taken away. He knows that it is now time to focus on his health and getting better so that he can live out his dream to the best of his ability.
Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It happens when your blood sugar levels rise far higher than they should. This is also called hyperglycemia. Too much sugar in the blood can cause symptoms such as:
– Increased hunger
– Frequent urination
– Weight loss
– Slow-healing wounds
– Frequent infections
– Increased thirst
This type of diabetes happens when your body becomes insulin resistant. Insulin is what helps to keep your blood sugar in check. If you become resistant to it, more sugar will be flowing through your veins. If you think that you have any of these symptoms see a doctor immediately for treatment.
