Most people who spend a lot of their life struggling with managing their weight and then finally lose it and keep it off have a story and Chaka Khan is no different. The singing sensation shared her story with Essence magazine. She shares that finding out that she had Type 2 Diabetes was what gave her the big push and motivation to finally take charge of managing her weight in a healthy and sustainable way.
When asked about her decision to lose weight, she said,
“You know, I had diabetes type two and high blood pressure. I adopted my 10-year-old granddaughter last year. I have to be there for her. I knew I couldn’t go out like this so I just fasted for like a month, then I went vegan and went off meats and all dairy and anything with eyes. If I have a craving for a little baked fish or something I might eat it. But that’s about it. I’ve mostly been doing a lot of high-protein foods and a lot of vegetables and exercise.”
Asked about whether or not being a vegan was a big or challenging transition, she shared,
“Well not for me because I go back up and I’m an herbalist, so I’ve been going through this since I was 20, on and off. I felt like I needed to heal my body so I would just fast and eat no meat, no dairy. I’ve never been a fan of meat, dairy and sugar. And when I developed diabetes last year I said, “ Oh okay I’m not going to be here long. A change is coming.” So I started getting my mind set, then I started the fasting. Now it’s just a way of life not for me.’
Asked about her exercise of choice, she was honest, saying that she did not like to exercise but when she did, she chose walking. It’s great to see that at 59 (almost 60) years of age, this singing sensation has a love for life and is inspiring other women to take charge of their health and live happier and healthier lives.
