There could be a new form of exercise in town and it is something that you may not expect. That’s right…it’s time to twerk. When you think of the word twerking as of late, you are probably thinking of the VMA debacle that brought Miley Cyrus to the forefront of the media. Twerking however is not just shaking “what your mama gave you.” It is now actually becoming considered by some as a form of exercise, thanks to two Atlanta-based girls known as the Twerk Team.

The two girls post videos on Youtube that feature them twerking to music. They caught the attention of rapper Waka Flocka Flame and he even included them in a line of his song “Round of Applause” and had them in his music video. One blogger watched their videos and thought to herself that she would take their classes to get into shape if they held any.

The videos feature moves that are akin to Zumba moves. It may not be traditional or widely accepted as a form of dance, but twerking definitely has some benefits for your body. It is free too. You don’t have to leave the house, you don’t need equipment, you don’t need a gym membership. All you need is a stereo!

When you try twerking, you will notice your heart rate climbing. This can help you to lose weight and burn some calories. It is really great for cardio and is also great for muscles toning in your thighs, waist, and hips.

As well as the physical benefits, you can get some mental benefits as well. You may just walk away from your workout session feeling confident and s*xy. The trend stemmed from the sub-Saharan African dances where total body control is necessary.

  1. DON’T. do it… One minute we’re upset when lil 6yr olds are twerking, lil girls are twerking in church basements, mothers are publicly punishing daughters and now let’s make twerking an innocent little exercise? THAT’S like blk kids can’t read the king’s english let’s teach em ebonics… The 1st reaction is the right reaction.. Especially the two twerkers mentioned who perform in lesbian establishments for tips (no offense) if that’s your thing..

  2. Do whatever you can to get your cardio workout in. Im not saying go twerk around everywhere and Im not saying start posting videos but Im saying get in ANY form of exercise you can. Its about your life and health not peoples personal opinions.
