We all have stress. It could be about money, about work, about our relationships, or about our children. A little stress is good for you, it keeps the adrenaline pumping. When you are too stressed out however, there are some scary side effects that should make you take a look at life and see what you can do to make it less stressful.
Did you know that an extremely stressful event such as a divorce or being fired can actually cause your brain to shrink? The gray matter will actually disappear in your emotional and psychological areas of your brain, which later on down the road can lead to mental illness or psychotic breaks.
Stress isn’t just bad for adults either. Children that are exposed to violence and trauma early in life begin to age faster. Due to the stress of the trauma, the cells will age more quickly than they should. Children are also affected right from conception if their parent is too stressed. The effect that it has on the parent’s genes can transfer to the child as well during pregnancy.
Not only does stress make us angry, but it makes us depressed as well. People who have more stress in their lives tend to develop depression which often ends up needing to be medicated.
Mental issues aside, the physical effects of stress are extremely harmful. The more stressed you are, the more likely you are to develop a chronic disease, have a stroke, or have a heart attack. When you react to stress you are putting strain on your body, which raises risk factors for many different medical episodes. If you have a cold, it will be much harder to get rid of when you are going through a stressful time. Cancer is harder to fight off as well.
The next time you feel you are becoming too stressed, sit back, take a deep breath and remember, you can get through it, you just need to relax.
