Does a “roll in the hay” Count as a Workout?

Exercise can be boring if you aren’t finding the right workout for you. There is one fun activity that you may not think of as a workout, but if done right it can certainly burn a great deal of calories. That’s right, we are talking about s*x. One of the best forms of exercise around!

PLOS One published a study about s*x as exercise. The study was performed in Canada and used armbands on couples to observe their activity. The bands were placed on 21 different couples and were to be worn while the couple was having s*x. The average age of the people in the study was 22 years old. The armbands were also worn during a 30 minute treadmill workout to get a relative idea of calories and the workout that you got from both.

The results of the study showed that the women when running on the treadmill burned and average of 7.1 calories per minute. When they were having s*x they burned an average of 3.1 calories per minute. While it seems that s*x is not as effective of a workout as running on the treadmill this is not exactly true. Having s*x took less effort than running.

From these results you can see that burning calories is a benefit of having s*x, but at 93 calories for every half hour it would be hard to make it an effective enough workout to be your only exercise for the day. You should still be doing a regular exercise routine such as cardio and strength training but if you want to add in more burned calories. It is certainly more fun than going for a run by yourself!
