Your metabolism is one of the most important parts to your health. If you have a fast metabolism you will be able to burn more calories and fat. If you have a sluggish metabolism you could end up packing on pounds if you are not very careful about what you are eating and how you are exercising. The more stressed you get throughout life the more damage you may do to your metabolism. As you age it slows down gradually but adding stress and worry on top of aging could accelerate this. Here are some things that you can do to help repair the excess damage to your metabolism.
1. Muscle mass and strength play a key role in your metabolism. To help increase these two things you should do resistance training regularly. Walking and other cardio activities will help you to burn calories but to actually gain muscle mass you will need to do the resistance training.
2. Give yourself a little break every now and then. Stress can take a hold on your life and ruin your health before you even realize it. We live in a very busy world these days where everything is about getting things done as quickly as we can to pack more into our day. This leads to poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and lack of downtime. Make sure that you take some time for yourself every now and then to just relax. Go shopping, take a bath, check in to a bed and breakfast for a night without any electronics. If you can learn to take care of yourself and recharge your batteries every now and then your body will respond.
3. How you think about the food that you are eating can affect what is absorbed. If you feel guilty about eating something your brain is going to send a signal to your body that will tell it to shut down your digestive system. This means that the food will not metabolize like it should and you could be missing out on key nutrients from whatever it is that you ate. If you find that you are going to eat something that you feel guilty over, try finding a healthier alternative that you won’t have to feel guilty about.
