Do you find yourself run down and tired all the time? Do you think it is just because you aren’t getting enough sleep? Think again. There may be another cause for your fatigue. Here are four often undiagnosed reasons why you may be so tired.
1. Iron Deficiency Anemia – When you are running low on iron in your blood, you run low on energy. There are many reasons why you could be iron deficient, such as a parasitic infection, vegan diet, celiac disease and heavy menstruation. Some of the symptoms include fatigue, hair loss, restless leg syndrome and cravings for ice, dirt, or clay. A simple blood test can determine your iron level.
2. Hypothyroidism – Millions of people around the world have hypothyroidism but many go undiagnosed. There are many different things that can cause this, but the most common is a glitch in your autoimmune system. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, cold sensitivity, weight gain, muscle aches, irregular periods, swollen eyelids and thinning hair. A blood test can confirm your thyroid hormone levels.
3. Vitamin D Deficiency – Time to get some sun! When we spend most of our days indoors, our skin doesn’t get to soak up some of that wonderful Vitamin D the sun beams out. It is used in hundreds of different functions in our bodies such as regulating our immune system. If you begin to take a Vitamin D supplement make sure you are monitored by a doctor.
4. Food Sensitivities – You may be sensitive to certain types of food such as gluten, dairy, eggs, or soy and not even realize it. If your body is sensitive to this food it will result in fatigue. Consider trying an elimination diet for 4-6 weeks to see how you feel after not eating a certain food such as gluten.
