When we are stressed out or depressed we often turn to food. It is a very common coping mechanism for women everywhere. Unfortunately when we turn to food it is often some of the worst food we can eat such as candy, macaroni and cheese, or pizza. While these foods may make us feel better for a few minutes, they will end up making us feel worse in the long run. Here are some foods that you should eat that will help you for the long haul.

1. Foods with magnesium in them such as avocados, spinach, almonds, and black beans will help raise your serotonin levels. Serotonin is responsible for your mood. If you have a lot of it, you are happy and content, but if the levels dip you can feel depressed.

2. Healthy fats and complex carbs can be a great way to help improve your mood and lower stress. Try eating foods such as whole grain breads, seeds, avocados, and veggies like sweet potatoes. The healthy fats are good for your heart and blood flow. The carbs help to raise your serotonin levels without the sugar crash that comes after eating junk foods like brownies or cakes. You won’t feel guilty after having some foods with complex carbs either.

3. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help to decrease depression. Some foods that have omega-3s are salmon, walnuts, hemp, chia seeds, and tuna.

Make sure that you have a healthy balance of these three categories. They can all work together to increase your serotonin levels and help you to stay healthy at the same time. There are no sugar crashes or feelings of guilt, only the benefits of a happy and healthy lifestyle. Make sure that you do not skip meals as this can really be a detriment to your health.
