Did you know that you don’t actually have to have s-x or intercourse to be able to catch an STD? A lot of people excuse their promiscuous ways by stating that they are always using protection, but protection doesn’t keep you clear of all the diseases that are out there. Black women are at especially high risk of catching STDs, since black men have more partners in their lifetimes than other groups, according to the CDC. Also, not as many black people get married as whites, which increases the number of s-x partners you have in your life time.
One way to catch an STD without intercourse is through “oral pleasure.” If a man goes down on you and has herpes, he can pass it to you by putting his mouth in contact with your private parts. Also, if he has genital herpes and you put your mouth on him, you can catch something as well.
Dr. Andrew Lang at the Huffington Post writes a great article about how you can catch STDs without having s-x. He says that STDs are regularly undetected, since people don’t always get tested for all of the diseases. Those who sleep with black men may have to be just as careful, since a lot of black men are struggling with high unemployment and incarceration rates, meaning that some of them are not insured and don’t go to the doctor. We’re not bashing our brothers, but it’s the truth. Dr. Lang tells more:
I had a patient in his 50s who came to be seen for a recurring rash on his back. He had it for years and had never been told what it was. I knew in a second it was a herpes infection that had migrated from an earlier contact. Most likely it had been a genital contact with someone who didn’t even know they had herpes. He might have been spreading his infection also, not knowing he was doing so. We tested him and it came back positive. Some people don’t want to know they have “VD,” but he was glad because then he could be treated effectively rather than being treated for a rash and never getting better.
