Drinking wine is something that a lot of people enjoy doing. They may enjoy the taste, they may enjoy the buzz, they may enjoy the benefits that they get from drinking that glass with dinner every night. Now wine lovers can rejoice because there is some good news about one of their favorite drinks. It may be just as beneficial for your heart to drink a glass of red wine as it is to go to the gym every day.
The University of Alberta conducted a study lead by Jason Dyck. They found that red wine has enough resveratrol in it to give you all of the heart-healthy benefits of working out at the gym. Resveratrol is an antioxidant that has a multitude of benefits. It can help reduce your risk of a serious heart condition, improves muscle and bone function, prevents blood clots, and helps to reduce cholesterol. These are all of the same benefits that you would get from going to workout at the gym every day. This of course does not mean that you should stop going to the gym since it does not burn fat or calories.
You can also get resveratrol from foods such as grapes and nuts. These may be better options if you cannot tolerate alcohol or if you just don’t like the taste of wine. Make sure you get red grapes as these are the ones with the most resveratrol in it. Alcohol and the sugars that are found in it can have more damaging effects that would counteract the benefits if you drank too much. Most doctors would not recommend wine as a replacement for the gym. There is nothing wrong with having a glass with dinner though!
If you are a red wine drinker there are some other benefits that you may not be aware of as well. Red wine can help to reduce the risk of cataracts, reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, help to reduce the risk of colon cancer, and slows down any brain decline that comes with aging. With all of these benefits on board it is a wonder that more people don’t drink red wine every day!
