There are many different terms that can describe your relationship status. You have single, married, divorced, separated, and in a relationship. But now there may be a new term to describe a very unique relationship and it is called uncoupled. One couple in San Francisco, California has “uncoupled” themselves and it is a controversial relationship.
The basis of uncoupling is a couple that does not want to stay married to each other but does not want to get divorced either. The couple in California, Clark and Valerie Tate went through an entire ceremony to uncouple themselves. They had all of their family and friends on a beach together to witness the ceremony. They took their wedding rings off and gave them back to each other. Mr. Tate stated that the rings didn’t symbolize who they were and what they meant to each other anymore and so they were giving the rings back.
Now you may be wondering why the Tate’s didn’t just get a divorce. They felt that this was the easiest way to end their relationship on a friendly note without the animosity and drama that inevitably comes with almost every divorce. They do not consider themselves a married couple any longer or even romantic partners. They do live in the same house still and raise their 10 year old son together. The difference is that they sleep in different rooms and are in relationships with other people. They realize that this is a very unconventional way to live but for them it works.
The Tates are not the only ones that have tried uncoupling. Chris Martin and Gwenyth Paltrow stated that they were going through uncoupling a few months ago. Clark and Valerie stated that divorce was not going to be an option for them. Clark had been married twice previously and knew how hard divorce was on everyone. They wanted their son to lead a somewhat normal family life without having to be split between two homes. They are each in relationships with other people and have worked out a set of rules to deal with so that they do not get in each other’s way. This may seem like a very strange set up for most people but if it works for them and keeps everyone happy maybe others will try uncoupling.
