Since news broke that Jennifer Hudson would be playing the part of Nelson’s Mandela’s ex-wife and fellow activist, Winnie Mandela in a new movie, there have been a lot of critics who said that she was the wrong choice.
Hudson plays opposite Terrence Howard who has taken on the huge task of playing Nelson Mandela.
Even with all the criticism about her decision to take on the role of Winnie, Hudson seems to still be confident in her abilities. The Oscar winner admitted that playing Winnie has definitely been the most intimidating role that she has ever taken on but when asked about how she felt about all the critics, she said,
“I try not to think of those things…No one knows your potential the way that you do. I lot of people said the same thing about Dreamgirls.”
Hudson also credited her “husband” on the set, Howard, for helping her a lot and really helping her stretch herself to give her best performance.
“Working with Terrence, he automatically makes you raise your bar…He’s always pushing. Every day he would address me as Winnie, and he would come in in character all the time. I don’t think there was a time I was talking to Terrence.”
When the movie was first announced, among Hudson’s critics was Winnie Mandela herself. While the activist was very vocal, she was actually more offended that she was not consulted about the movie than she was by the choice of actress who would be playing her in the movie.
The movie opens this weekend; will you be watching?
