Juicing: Silent and Unknown Killer?

British model Peaches Geldof passed away recently at the young age of 25. There has been no cause of death confirmed but some are speculating as to whether her extreme juicing diets could be to blame. Doctor Keri Peterson says that she does not ever recommend juicing. She says that for a few days it is harmless, but if you take it to an extreme and do it all the time, you are not doing yourself any favors.

The problem with juicing is that you are getting no protein and no fiber because it is all discarded in the pulp of the veggies and fruits that you are juicing. This means that whatever your body has left, it uses up during the digestion process. If you are on a liquid diet for an extended period of time like Geldof was you will lose weight, but you will also lose muscle. Your metabolism will begin to slow down as well. Once you go back to eating normal foods after juicing you will gain weight due to the fact that your metabolism is much slower than it was before.

National Eating Disorder Association chief Russell Marx, M.D. says that when you are drinking the juices you are depriving yourself of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats. This is not good for your body in any way. When you do this for an extended period of time your body will adapt to it but will make things that much worse once you stop juicing. When you begin to eat food again you will have levels such as your phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium take a dive. These are all important for heart function and when you mess with the balance of the three you can end up having heart failure. Your heart will overwork itself trying to fix the damage that was done while juicing for so long. Marx says that this is something that can happen in anorexia patients as well.

  1. “Juicing” is primarily used as a “supplement” to your diet not in “replacement” & the need for the consumption of “Protein” specifically” animals protein is highly exaggerated, Bulls & Gorillas achieve sufficient size. & strength without it & most primates on this planet consume very little

    • There is a lot of protein in beans and legumes along with wild caught fish. The hell with pork and steroid beef!! Watch your fruit and veggies and make sure they are organic or washed well. I eat organic. Black folks pay 40 grand for a car but cheap out on what goes IN the body!! Eat to live…Hotep..

      • I am well aware have been a practicing vegetarian for 7 years along with being a Marathon runner, I consume the abundance of my “protein” from peanut butter, beans & organic seeds & nuts that I travel across state lines to Indiana to purchase @ bulk from an establishment there

    As a Juice consultant, I can assure you it was more than juicing involved in the early demise of this young woman. Someone gave her advice that was incorrect and she listened to it. Her family needs to find that person and take them to civil court and criminal court for giving medical advice without a license. She also should have been eating solid food.

  3. I agree with Tony. The person that wrote this article is not aware of the many wonders and health benefits of juicing. What probably happened is that she was consuming toxic fruits and vegetables that overloaded her system. Also, many people rely on unhealthy protein supplements that are not natural. This does result in poor nutrition. Getting the proper Fiber along with the vegetable protein is critical when juicing. My condolences to her family and loved ones.

    I blend as oppose to juice because I also need the fiber…other than that I depend on legumes and nuts for my poteins…this notion of eating meat for proteins is BS…where do non meat eating animals get their proteins?

    This article is based upon pure speculation. The author of this should have waited until the autopsy was completed and the official cause of death was determined before posting this. I find this reckless and irresponsible.

  6. I love juicing and I have an issue with this article. It didn’t say how long she was juicing and if she was only juicing and not drinking water etc. If you’re going to post news, post all of it including all of t by email facts so that the story won’t be written from a one sided perspective.

  7. Do I just did some Go ogling on Peaches and any intelligent person would certainly conclude that juicing had absolutely nothing to do with the cause of her death. I won’t get into a debate on a person’s life style because she isn’t here to defend herself, but what I will say is this. The person who wrote this probably has the Nutribullet. I’m a juicing pro and the key to any persons health is to burn fat, build muscle and have optimum nutrition.
