Grammy Award-winning singer and performer Mary J. Blige (pictured) bore her heart during a panel discussion at the recent Essence Festival in New Orleans, which lasted from June 29th to July 2nd.
The 46-year-old “My Life” hitmaker talked about the turbulence she has been through after experiencing a very public divorce from Kendu Issacs, her former husband, and manager. Their marriage of 13 years ended in July of 2016 when Blige filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences.”
This past spring, a judge ordered Blige to pay Issacs $30,000 per month in temporary spousal support, a further insult to the injury of divorcing Issacs over his infidelity. Blige told Tamron Hall, the moderator of the panel discussion that during her divorce, she felt a great deal of worthlessness.
“Mentally, you’ve been beaten down and manipulated, in front of the world. You’re trying to protect the person. You’re trying to hold yourself together, so when you’ve been beaten down mentally, you go home, and you deal with that…I was beginning to think I was nothing,” Blige said.
“Being Mary J. Blige, the celebrity is secondary. I’m a human being first. I suffer like everybody else,” she continued.
During her live musical performance at the Essence Festival, Blige voiced her frustration with her court order to fans in between songs. ““How is it that somebody gets to cheat and destroy everybody’s life, but I’ve got to pay for it?” Blige asked the fans in attendance.
Despite the gloominess of her reality, Blige proudly flaunted her bodacious body at the Essence Festival. Her well-chiseled abdominal muscles were on full display, according to a festival attendee who spoke exclusively with Page Six, the tea-spilling column of the New York Post.
“People were saying she’s on the divorce diet. Her body was hot and she flaunted her abs during her show. She looked like young Mary,” the source told Page Six.
