An amazing, young, and black female author has achieved an extraordinary feat with a book she says was inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
Angie Thomas (pictured right) is the author who wrote the groundbreaking young-adult novel called “The Hate You Give (cover pictured left).” Thomas made the title in honor of a rap song about societal injustice written by the late Tupac Shakur. This Jackson, Mississippi native’s literary gift to the world was released on February 28, 2017. The story line of Thomas’ book unravels the life of a 16-year-old black girl named Star Carter.
Carter is a basketball player at her local high school. She lives in a poor, predominately black neighborhood, but attends classes at a predominately white school in an affluent community. Carter eventually witnesses a best friend she’s known all her life get gunned down by a rogue officer of law enforcement.
Experiencing this tragedy draws Carter to community activism in order to raise awareness about the oppression of black people in her city and the nation.
Thomas’ book has become a runaway hit. She’s already sold over 100,000 copies of “The Hate You Give” and dominated the number one spot on the New York Times Best-Seller’s List. The book has received much critical acclaim from some notable sources and there have also been discussions about the production of a movie based on Thomas’ storyline. A special column in New York Magazine called “The Cut” reported on Monday (March 20th) that actress Amandla Stenberg has been tapped to star in the film as Carter.
This past Friday (March 17th), New York Magazine’s Dayna Evans did a phone interview with Thomas.
“I know so many girls who have witnessed terrible things. We don’t give them enough credit or support. In the book, Starr finds her voice and her strength and her activism. I want young black girls to read this and understand: Your voice matters, your life matters,” Thomas said in her interview.
