Black women in America do not have to confine themselves to stereotypical aspirations when it comes to materializing their biggest prospective career goals.
The industries that drive various forms of entertainment (and some academic fields) are loaded with black women earning their keep in all walks of life. However, in industries home to professional circles comparable to those on Wall Street, it is an understatement to say that black women in certain positions are few and far between.
In fact, it would be more accurate (albeit sobering) to say that in certain societal enclaves of economic prosperity, black women do not exist. In America’s Wall Street culture, women as a whole (let alone black women) are not at all visible performing the professional duties of many coveted positions.
This was true until a young lady from Marietta, Georgia changed the world.
Lauren Simmons (pictured ) is a 24-year-old market-making maven who formerly worked as an equity trader on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for a firm called Rosenblatt Securities. At the tender age of 23, Simmons became the youngest full-time trader on the floor at the NYSE. She is only the second black woman in American history to accomplish this.
Simmons is a formally educated numbers woman who holds a bachelor’s degree in genetics and statistics. Her uncanny ability to dissect numerical formulas served her well when she aced the Series 19 Exam, which is a requirement for Wall Street floor brokers. Simmons proved she had what it took and brought her impeccable intangibles to the table.
“Being a trader, you make decisions within microseconds,” Simmons said on meeting Richard Rosenblatt, the CEO of Rosenblatt Securities. “So I think for [Mr. Rosenblatt], even for me, the choice of coming onto the trading floor made sense immediately,” Simmons told Dominique Fluker, a Senior Contributor for Forbes Magazine.
Simmons has accomplished such a remarkable feat in a short time, her life will be heralded in an upcoming movie, which stars budding young actress Kiersey Clemmons in the film’s lead role. Nowadays, Simmons earns A-list perks as an influencer by performing keynote speaking engagements, according to her LinkedIn page.
