Ernestine Shepherd has made quite name for herself. At 76 years old she is the oldest competitive body builder in the world. A Reddit user told the story of how she wakes up at 3am and meditates. She then goes for a ten mile run. This is all before lunch. She made it into the Guiness Book of World Records in 2010 and 2011 for being the oldest competitive body builder.
An image of Shepherd that has been floating around the internet has been viewed over 100,000 times. It is an inspiration to many. They see that when you get older you don’t have to look “nasty” or “haggard”. Shepherd is in amazing shape and certainly does not look her age at all.
Not only has Shepherd gained fame from her age and status as a body builder, but she is one of twelve people over 50 to be honored by the National Center for Aging and lifes DHA, which is a supplement, as having one of the Most Beautiful Minds in America. The HuffPost spoke with the Baltimore native at the 2011 Musclemania convention. She proudly flexed and smiled for all of the onlookers as she retained her title for the 2012 Guiness Book.
Shepherd has not always been this way. It started about 20 years ago. She said that she was with her sister and they were trying on bathing suits and were not happy with what they saw. She decided right then and there to make a change for the better. She plans on continuing with the body building shows, even into her 80s. She doesn’t feel that age is an issue in the competitions, as long as you are still able to do it!
