When you are checking your Facebook posts and see that your friends have all been exercising, what is your reaction? Do you become inspired, lace up your sneakers, and head out for a run or do you cringe and think about how much you despise every type of exercise that they are doing? If you answered the latter this thought process may not completely your fault. Your brain may be programmed to feel this way.
A study that was conducted at the University of Missouri followed two different groups of rats. The first group of rats was bred from parents that liked to run and exercise in their wheel. The second set of rats was bred from parents that got little to no exercise. What the researchers found was that the rats that came from parents who did not run as much had lower counts of neurons in their brains that were mature. This means that the neurons cannot properly process the dopamine that is released during exercise. Dopamine is a feel-good hormone. Since they did not get the reward of the dopamine in their system they did not want to run.
While the study has only been conducted on rats and not tested on humans it can still show the potential for an explanation as to why some people are completely horrified at the thought of exercise. There is no reward that they feel and so they do not think that it is something that they are motivated enough to do. Life is all about risk and reward and when you do not get the feel-good hormones at the end of a hard workout you are less likely to keep going with it. This of course is not an excuse not to go for a walk or to hop on a weight machine. Exercise is a necessary part of life so get out there and stay healthy and find an exercise that you love so you will be more motivated to go.
