Everyone reaches the point when they are losing weight where they plateau. It seems like no matter what they do they cannot get rid of the last few pounds. Some people blame their metabolism for their lack of weight loss which many other people see as an excuse. But a new study shows that you really can blame your metabolism at times for your inability to lose those last few pounds that you are trying to get rid of.
The National Institute of Health conducted a study on 12 different obese participants. They were told to fast for a day and then they were placed on a severe calorie-restricted diet. Over the course of six weeks they were on this reduced calorie diet where they ate half of the calories that they used to. Every day they were studied to see what their caloric deficit was. This is the amount of calories that are left after eating and burning off calories through the day.
What the researchers found was that the people who had a slow metabolism lost less weight. When they ate fewer calories their body went into panic mode and they ended up holding on to all of the food that they ate so the body could store it for energy later. Your body thinks that you are going to go into starvation mode if you don’t eat enough calories during the day. This is why skipping a meal or starving yourself is never a good idea and will not help you to lose weight the healthy way. Those who had a higher metabolism were able to lose more weight because they burned off whatever they ate.
Even if you have a slow metabolism it does not mean that you cannot lose weight. You just may have to work a little harder to do so. Make sure that you never skip any meals, and in fact eating six small meals a day could be beneficial. You want your body to know that you are not starving it and that it doesn’t need to hold on to those calories. You should also drink plenty of water. Exercise is important as well so that you can continue to burn calories.
