“Orange is the New Black” star Michelle Hurst was in a very serious car accident over the holidays which left her in a medically induced coma due to the extent of her injuries. She plays Miss Claudette on the Netflix hit series. She was in the coma for more than two weeks but is now awake.
Her castmates from the show set up a YouCaring.com account to help raise money for her medical expenses and money that she lost since she has been out of work for so long. As of Sunday, January 19th, they have raised $17,107 out of the $20,000 goal that they had set. Support has been pouring in from all over the country for her.
Hurst had to be put in a medically induced coma because she had to have multiple surgeries near her spine and the doctors did not want her to be moving at all while she was recovering from those surgeries as they could have caused permanent damage. She has since been brought out of the coma after 16 days and has opened her eyes as well.
There are very few details about the car accident and no specific injury details have been released.
Hurst’s character on “Orange is the New Black” is an elderly Haitian woman who is in prison for charges of employing and harboring child immigrants. She works in the kitchen on the show. She is bunked with the main character of the show, Piper Chapman, who is played by actress Taylor Schilling. Chapman is in prison for trafficking money.
All of her cast and crewmates wish Hurst a very speedy recovery and hope that she is back to work with them soon.
