A new follow-up to the Best Man movie franchise has shaped up to be one of the most anticipated films in the history of black Hollywood.
We loved the first edition in 1999. The box office numbers proved it. Directed by Malcolm Lee (renowned filmmaker Spike Lee’s cousin), The Best Man raked in over $34 million dollars when it was all said and done. That is quadruple the price of what was paid to make the film.
More members of the beautiful star-studded cast (Taye Diggs, Morris Chesnut, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, and more) returned for the second batch of both funny and tear-jerking awesomeness. 2013’s The Best Man Holiday raked in more than twice overall than the first film did.
The franchise sequel was also given favorable acclaim in the same fashion that its 1999 predecessor did. However, according to numerous media sources, including The New York Daily News, one of the sexiest film franchises ever to come out courtesy of black Hollywood is not shaping up to be a trilogy as of yet.
Originally in 2014, Universal Pictures, the distributor of the first two editions announced that the third edition of this wonderful series tentatively called The Best Man Wedding would be released on April 15, 2016. But Malcolm Lee, an original founder of the film feast told The Daily News that the romantic comedy has been shelved indefinitely.
“There is a desire to make the movie from the studio’s perspective, from my perspective, from the actors’ perspectives, we all would like to make it happen,” the younger Lee said in his exclusive interview with The Daily News. “It’s a matter of trying to get the right time of year to do it,” Lee added.
At press time, The Best Man Wedding hasn’t even been shot yet. This is due to interior technicalities, such as series co-star and franchise favorite Terrence Howard’s current obligations to “Empire.” It appears that this and other inadvertent issues are standing in the way of another gorgeous blessing from the makers of this successful film franchise.
Let’s hope we won’t have to wait another 14 years for the next one.
