Around 10% of women in the U.S. have trouble conceiving or trouble staying pregnant. This can happen for a variety of reasons. Fertility treatments can work in some cases, but not all. Remy Ma is one of the 10% as she faced tragedy when she lost her baby. She had an ectopic pregnancy which is when the fetus develops in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. It is a very dangerous and life-threatening condition for the mother. There is nothing else that can be done other than terminating the pregnancy. Should the baby continue to develop inside of the tube it will rupture and cause serious internal bleeding that would lead to death. Remy Ma was devastated when she learned that due to the damage she would not be able to have children.
Her doctor told her that they could fix it through surgery but it would cost quite a bit. Remy had the money and so she did what was necessary. She realized that there were so many women out there who were not able to do the same thing that she was or were not able to see fertility specialists because they didn’t have the financial means to. In light of this, she set up a fund that would help women who couldn’t afford to get the help they needed during their pregnancy or while they were trying to conceive. She said that she didn’t realize how many women there were out there who wanted to have children but could not without the help of medical intervention.
Procedures such as in-vitro fertilization can cost anywhere from $12,000-$17,000. If it fails the first time, which there is a high chance that it will, many people cannot afford to go through another round. The chance of a woman getting pregnant from this method is very small even though they implant multiple embryos to try and raise the chances of one taking. Many health insurance companies will not cover fertility procedures. Remy Ma said that she found it to be strange that you could terminate your pregnancy and some insurance companies will cover that, but they will not help when you are trying to create a life.
Remy Ma has taken to speaking with lawmakers and politicians because she has noticed that most stay quiet about this issue. She says that she confronts them head on, especially when they are pro-life, to see why insurance is not made to cover the cost of families who want to bring a life into the world and why it is so expensive to do so.
