Researchers: Home-schooled Kids Eat Healthier and Have Healthier Weights

A new study which was published in the journal Obesity shows that children who are homeschooled have a lower percentage of body fat than kids who attended school.

The study involved children in the age range of 7 to 12 years old. They looked at children who were homeschooled and those who went to school outside of the home and compared their eating habits and their weight and body fat percentages. They found that both sets of children got the same amount of activity through the day and while they were at home ate pretty much the same quality and quantity for meals. The one big difference that they noticed was that when the second group went to school and ate there they had higher amounts of sodium, fats, sugars, and less of the good stuff such as veggies and fruits.

Due to the poor diet that the children received at school they had higher body fat percentages even though they were getting the same amount of activity than those who were homeschooled. When a child eats all of their meals at home they have the parents there to regulate what they are eating and can ban foods that they do not deem healthy. This is not the case when a child is getting lunch from the cafeteria in school. They often do not have many choices as to what they can eat and there are very few healthy options such as salads or fruits and veggies that they can choose from.

This study did not include children that bought their own lunches to school as opposed to eating the food that was provided.
