The world watched as champion tennis pro Serena Williams fumbled tennis balls, missed serves, and stumbled around. Rumors began to fly stating that Williams had been drunk during Wimbledon. Her sister, Venus Williams, told her that she was concerned and that Serena needed to step off of the court. After just three matches Williams finally conceded and was forced off the courts. She hadn’t even realized what had happened to her until a few days later when she was able to get up and move around.
Williams had been diagnosed with a viral illness but she said that while she was on the court she really had no idea how sick she actually was. She had been feeling a little under the weather but decided to play through it. What resulted was a scary performance and a forfeit in the doubles match. She had been scheduled to do another tournament in Bastad the next week but her mother nixed it. She needed to get better before she could return back to the court for tournaments. She had a working vacation and a movie shoot scheduled for the week after that which she ended up going to. She said that she was really glad that she went to Croatia. Her friend and hitting partner, Sascha Bajin, recommended the country to her because there were more tennis courts than people. Williams said that while she was on her vacation she would practice in the morning and then take it easy for the rest of the day so that she wouldn’t become sick again.
Even though she only had three days of rest at home she feels great and is ready to get on with her work. She wants to return to the court and redeem herself. She also states however that she will be getting checked out by a doctor. She is getting tested for many different things because she understands her family’s health history and wants to make sure that she is absolutely fine before she stepped out onto the court. She will be playing in the Bank of West Classic as planned.
