Professional tennis champion Serena Williams (pictured right) has broken her silence regarding the negativity that was spewed over the internet from jealous social media users who disapprove of her interracial relationship.
The 35-year-old, 39-time Grand Slam winner reportedly started dating Reddit co-founder and executive chairman Alexis Ohanian (pictured left) in 2015. The couple became formally engaged in late 2016. Ohanian, 34, is the son of two European immigrants from Armenia. He has done very well for himself as a tech entrepreneur.
In April 2017, the engaged couple announced they were expecting their first child.
However, black people and white people in America voiced their disgust over Ohanian’s interracial relationship with Williams. Tennis coach and former world class tennis player Ilie Nastase was even suspended from his coaching job in professional tennis for using his social media account to post racist statements about Williams and Ohanian.
Recently, Williams did a one-on-one interview with Brittaney Trent, an anchor, and correspondent for Yahoo Sports. In her exclusive interview, which was published online Tuesday (July 18th), Williams actually spoke out about the negative backlash over her relationship on camera as opposed to posting about it on social media accounts.
When Trent asked Williams how she felt about the public scrutiny she has experienced for being in a relationship with a white man, Williams partially replied the following:
“I think for me, it’s something that I deal with every day in my sport…and you know, playing in a sport that has predominantly white people in it…but for the most part, I don’t really pay attention to anything else because I always try to be different. I’ve always been different and I break different barriers. I think at the end of the day you just have to be happy with who you are and who you you’re with. That’s what matters most.” (Yahoo Sports)
Williams intends to return to tennis after giving birth to her first child. Ohanian once made the coveted Forbes Magzine List for being one of the most influential Silicon Valley businessmen who is 30-years-old or younger.
