We all know that vitamins are an important part of the day. We need them for our bodies to function properly. But did you also know that you can take too many vitamins? Some people that take Vitamin C supplements take up to 1000mg per day, which equals 14 oranges. Your body is only meant to handle a certain amount of Vitamins and when you take more than you should you push your body to process them in a way that it shouldn’t.
Antioxidants that are found in some vegetables and fruits are great for you too in small quantities. They destroy free radicals that can cause cancer, but at the same time if you take in too many antioxidants, you could end up doing more harm than good as oxidation is needed for essential life functions.
A Cochrane review was done in 2012 on multiple clinical trials and found that too much beta carotene and Vitamin A can actually increase your risk of death. The reason for this is that when you take too many vitamins it causes your body to act in unnatural ways, counteracts oxidation, and leaves you immune system weak and vulnerable to a host of different diseases.
One of the biggest problems with vitamin supplements is that they are not FDA regulated, so no safety data is available and it is hard to tell if there are alternatives that are safer. Doctors should be careful when recommending these supplements to patients and better education needs to be brought to light about the amount of vitamins you should be taking every day and how much is too much. A general rule of thumb is that if the supplement has more than your 100% daily value of a vitamin, don’t take it.
