When women go through menopause they are given s*x hormones like estrogen so that their hormones are still regulated. Some men have to have testosterone supplements because their body does not produce enough. But for people without conditions such as this excess hormones can cause health issues. Most people wouldn’t take hormone supplements if they don’t need to but unfortunately they are found in some of the most common foods.

Plants – There are a lot of compounds that are hormone-related that are found in plants and soy. They have a much higher content than meat products do as well. The hormones that are found in plants are called phytoestrogens or isoflavones. The good news is that these hormones will not cause health risks. Dr. Laura Streicher who writes for Everyday Health states that he wouldn’t tell patients to stay away from foods that are high in phytoestrogens as they are not harmful to the body. Many people are afraid of estrogen as they believe that it causes [email protected] cancer however Dr. Streicher states that this is not true. Estrogen and progestin together can cause cancer but not excess estrogen by itself. The liver metabolizes the hormones that are in the plants before they have a chance to affect the body so do not be afraid to eat these plants.

Meats – In meats you will find hormones such as testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone. These are given to cows while they are being raised to produce a larger cow which means more beef. It also helps the cows to produce more milk. The problem with this is that the meats and milk that comes from the cows can contain these three hormones which we then ingest. In the US chickens and pigs are not allowed to be given these hormones.

The good news is that the amounts of hormones that end up in the meat are very low. Normally beef will have 1.3 nanograms of hormones. When the cow is given the extra hormones, the levels measure around 1.9ng per serving of meat. The milk has low amounts of estrogen as well at 59ng per two cups. While that may seem like a big jump from the amount that is in the meat it is actually still a very small number. When women take the hormone supplement estradiol they are actually putting 50,000ng in their bodies. Just like with the plant hormones the liver will process the excess hormones before they are able to affect the body.

  1. Just wondering if these female hormones that are given to beef will have an effect on my grandsons? You spoke mainly about the female.

  2. I have been telling my doctors this for YEARS! My hormones are already off balanced and when I eat beef or pork I instantly get hot flashes and can tell my hormones go sky high. They never believed me and nor did they take me serious.
