Home entertainment giant ABC seems to be in a very giving mood when it comes to rewarding black actresses who play lead roles on a few of the network’s most popular TV series.
Kerry Washington made a big splash earlier this week after ABC announced an overall production deal, which would partner the network with the sultry Scandal star’s new TV production company in a major way. However, the good news for black women in Hollywood is getting even better.
According to Variety.com, ABC has just produced a new deal for another black female star who is dominating ratings on the ABC hit series How To Get Away With Murder. Emmy Award-winning actress Viola Davis (pictured) has also dropped a bomb on Hollywood by inking her own overall development deal with ABC Studios.
Davis founded a TV production company called JuVee Productions over the course of her career as an accomplished actress. However, just like Washington, she has sought to have more creative control over her TV and film career.
Along with her husband Julius Tennon (JuVee Productions co-founder), Davis will be using the company as a vehicle to help spearhead new ventures in the entertainment business, such as developing projects for broadcast, cable, streaming services and digital platforms.
This new deal with ABC will help Davis and her production team deliver on all those things together in the future. “We started JuVee because we wanted to see narratives that reflected our multi-ethnic and multi-faceted culture,” Davis told Variety.
“We wanted to be a part of classic storytelling, and we didn’t want to wait,” she continued. One of the biggest moves JuVee Productions made was enlisting AndrewWang to lead the company’s television development and production divisions.
AndrewWang was formerly a production executive at Bravo. He was the cable network’s vice president of scripted television development and he was also behind the success of hit Bravo shows like “Girlfriends Guide to Divorce.” JuVee Productions has hired AndrewWang with high hopes.
“Our goal has always been to champion bold, authentic, and courageous voices and AndrewWang is just that. Andrew has an outside-the-box mindset and the experience to propel our vision forward, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to our team,” Tennon told Variety.
Currently, JuVee Productions has a development slate on TNT’s show “Conviction.”
