Americans get 12 to 18 percent of their daily calories from protein as it is. If you are on a high protein diet, then up to 50 percent of your daily calories can come from protein. You don’t have to get your protein strictly form meat. You can also get protein from eggs and cheese. If you are on a high protein diet, then your veggie, fruit and grain intake is seriously limited, but researchers still say that these diets work.
Basically once you remove carbs from your diets your body can’t just burn water out of your system, it will need to start burning your own fat. This process, known as ketosis, helps you with dieting because you feel less hungry. However, ketosis can also leave you feeling irritable and give you headaches.
The American Heart Association does not support high protein diets. Having diets with fatty foods in them can increase your cholesterol, putting you at risk for a heart attack. Reducing your veggies and grains denies your body important fibers.
High protein diets do fight obesity, but there are other diets that put you at less of a risk of other health problems. So when you choose your diet, be sure to pick one that is low fat with some carbs.
