Singer Kelis (pictured) propelled herself into the national discussion about domestic violence and other forms of anti-woman abuse by conducting what she knew would be a well-publicized interview with Hollywood Unlocked, an established media source that covers entertainment.

In her lengthy video-recorded interview with a Hollywood Unlocked correspondent, Kelis, 38, opened up about what she alleges are incidents of physical abuse, which she received at the hands of her ex-husband, hip-hop icon Nas. Kelis and Nas officially divorced around eight years ago.

However, in her interview, Kelis spoke volumes about her past relationship turbulence that can serve as either a cautionary tale to black women, a form of public resistance against abusers (domestic offenders or otherwise), or an appeal to clean house directed toward the influentially controversial hip-hop community.

“[My previous marriage] was really dark. A lot of drinking. A lot of mental and physical abuse and it got to the point where if I wasn’t pregnant, I might have stayed with [Nas],” Kelis said in her interview.

She also recalled how she looked at the Rihanna and Chris Brown situation with pain as she related to it in her own life.

“When the Rihanna and Chris Brown pictures came out I thought about coming out because I also had bruises all over my body. But I didn’t say anything because I’m private. But seeing her the way she looked and then looking at myself… I felt embarrassed,” Kelis went on to say.

Kelis also gave a call to action directed toward female victims of abuse by saying, “Women can’t be afraid to fight.” Watch Kelis’ entire interview below.
