Cancer is a scary disease. It is even scarier when you find out that you have it and it is too late. Melanoma is a type of cancer that you can check for at home. If you look over your body and notice an irregularly shaped mole or a discolored mole, it doesn’t hurt to get it checked out. One woman shared her story about a mole that she found in the shower that was close to her [email protected] (a woman’s external gen!tals). She debated as to whether she should get it checked out or not, remembering that dermatologists typically do not check out the private regions on your body.
Cosmo writer Michelle Ruiz was invited to try out this new program called MoleSafe. It is a program where they take high resolution photos of all of the moles on their bodies with a camera and a dermatoscope (a microscope that takes photos of moles at extremely high resolution) and then a dermatologist will look over the photos close up to see if there are any irregularities. They will go back every year and have the process done again so that they can determine whether size and shape has changed on any of the moles.
When she entered the room she said the woman taking the photos was extremely professional and asked her cautiously if she wanted to take her bra off for photos of any moles that she may have on her chest at that point. When the process was nearly over Ruiz was questioning whether she should tell the woman taking the photos that she had a mole down there. She finally gave in and had her photograph it. When the results came back that was the only irregular mole out of the 23 that were on her body. She says that she is getting it checked again in three months but doctors are not worried. It goes to show that you need to be your own advocate and check your body because you may be the only one willing to look closely at your private parts.
