Mo’Nique and her husband Sidney Hicks have been best friends since they were 14. They have been married since May of 2006. They both have been very candid about having an open marriage. Most people think that open marriages are just a way to sleep with as many people as possible while maintaining a facade that they are in a happy marriage. Mo’Nique has stated that we are all humans and that we all have needs that sometimes a marriage restricts. She says that this is why people cheat and she didn’t want that for her marriage. The comedian says that instead of cheating on each other they have an open and honest dialogue about everything that concerns their marriage and others who make come into the picture.

When Mo’Nique and Hicks first got married she asked to keep it an open marriage as she was already seeing someone else and didn’t want to have to give him up. She is no longer with this person on the side and says that at this point she is not even thinking about being physical with anyone else but she is still open to it should the situation arise again. She and Hicks have built a solid relationship that is filled with trust as they have been best friends for so long. She knows that she can talk to him about anything and he will listen with an open mind.

Open marriages are becoming increasingly popular, especially with celebrities. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have made it no secret that they have an open marriage. The same goes for Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Mo’Nique states that for some reason no one seems to care about their relationships being open but when they hear that she is in the same boat they all feel bad for her. She states that people tell her that they hope that he isn’t using her and that they feel pity for her. The comedian states that since she is someone who is viewed as a woman that could never get a man like Hicks, people think that she is being used in her relationship which is far from the truth.
