The pharmaceutical company Sprout Pharmaceuticals has been trying to get a new “medication” out into the world. They have been working on developing a l!bido-increasing pill for women who suffer from a low s*x drive. It was set to come out soon to the market however they have hit a roadblock with the FDA. They say that the drug helps women by treating chemicals in the brain that are responsible for mood and appetite because when a woman has a low s*x drive, often times it is more of a psychological thing than a physical issue.
The drug is call flibanserin and the FDA has rejected it twice already. The FDA says that they cannot see that the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks and side effects that come with it and so they have not approved it to be put on the market. Some of the side effects include nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. Sprout has sent appeal letter after appeal letter but they continue to be rejected by the FDA.
Sprout’s COO Cindy Whitehead says that there are 24 different drugs on the market right now for men with low l!bidos and s*xual dysfunctions but there are none for women. The pill was originally manufactured by a drug company in Germany but they dropped the project after the FDA rejected it.
Before women could even be prescribed a pill like this they would have to rule out so many other disorders that it would be a long time before they could have access to the medication anyway. Since low s*x drive in women is usually a result of something psychological it is a little more difficult to diagnose and treat.
