When the weather is nice there is nothing more relaxing than going for a run with the sun on your face and the cool wind in your hair. There is something about exercising outdoors that makes you feel more alive than when you are at a gym. There is a science behind this and reasons why working out outside is far better for you.
When you are outside you are noticing more of the world around you. You can hear the birds chirping, the leaves rustling, and feel the wind blowing. It can give you a sense of calm. It is easier to clear your mind when you are out in nature. When you are cramped in an office all day you may be focused and may be able to stay on task but you are mentally exhausted at the end of the day because this kind of concentrated effort takes a lot of hard work and energy. It is easier when you are out in nature because you can just relax and take everything in. This is called “green exercise” and can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve mood, and improve self-esteem.
You may feel comfortable working out at home or in the gym because of the privacy it offers, but being outside can give you a better experience and may make you work out longer. It is also much easier for you to breathe when you are outside as long as it is not too cold out. You can breathe in the fresh air and give your lungs a break from the stuffy air that is found in offices and gyms. No sweaty clothing smells wafting from the locker room, no boring gray walls to look at, and no televisions to divert your attention.
If you have problems such as allergies or asthma when you are outdoors speak with your doctor about when you should take your medications and if it is safe to be outdoors.
