All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl. This is why Jill should be leaving the office early instead of stressing about staying until the very last second of her eight hour shift. Researchers over the years have been finding that adult play time should be mandatory for working adults because it helps to increase productivity and even happiness in the workplace. Here are some reasons that you should be leaving the office early to play.
1. We have short attention spans, much like kids. Our spans are cyclical. Experts say after about 90 minutes our brain starts to shut down. It needs some downtime in order to refocus itself so it can properly function and store information. Every hour and a half or so, do some doodling, Facebooking, or even drawing on an Etch-a-Sketch to get the old noodle going again.
2. When you take time to play with others you build relationships. This is useful at work because the better your relationships with your co-workers, the better teamwork that you will have. It is also good to build relationships with others that you don’t work with so that you can network for your career.
3. Playtime boosts your creativity. Playing instruments, playing a video game, or even doing an artsy project can help unleash workplace creativity and help you to have better ideas once you are in the boardroom.
4. When you play, you are less stressed and conflicts are easier to resolve. Your stress hormone levels decrease while you are taking time to relax so that when a conflict arises, you are not stressed to capacity and may take time to think about a solution instead of jumping down someone’s throat.
