Working From Home? Tips to Ensure You Are as Productive as Possible

Working from home is not for everyone but many people absolutely love the freedom that it gives. I myself have worked from home for the last two years and it has been the best thing for me. It can be hard sometimes though to get into a routine and really be productive. There may be more distractions at home than there are in the office. Here are some different things that you can try to really make working from home work for you:

1. Make sure that you have a clean and tidy workspace. Studies have shown that clutter makes you less productive during the day no matter where you are working so make sure it’s clean. Also make sure that you are comfortable in the space that you designate in your home. Don’t put yourself near a drafty window or right in the sunlight. Get a comfortable chair that you do not mind spending 8 hours in. Make it feel like you are in the office still.

2. I am guilty of wearing my pajamas for a good portion of the day sometimes. I figure that I don’t have to go anywhere, I do not see customers face to face, and I don’t come in contact with a single person all day so why bother getting dressed while I am working? This is actually not a good thing for working from home. When you are comfortable in your pajamas your brain has a hard time of focusing on work because you are dressed for sleeping and relaxing. Get dressed before you settle in to work so that your mind can be mentally prepared for what you are doing.

3. Take some time in the morning before work to establish a routine and get ready just like you would if you were in the office. If you wake up and hop right on the computer you will be exhausted within a few hours. Your eating schedule will be completely thrown off and you could end up skipping breakfast because you get involved with work before giving yourself time to eat. Get up, take a shower, get dressed, and eat some breakfast before you start working to get energized and ready for the day.

4. Don’t work through lunch or eat at your desk. Get up, get away from the computer, and sit down to a meal in the kitchen. Go out for a walk if you don’t feel like eating anything. You need that time to yourself to rest your brain and recharge. If you have a long enough lunch go out somewhere every now and then. A drive will clear your head and you will be ready to finish your day once you come back.

5. Schedule your day. This is more for people who are self-employed but it can work for those who work for a company from home. Make a list of the things that you need to accomplish and then schedule them out. This can help you to get a clear picture of what needs to be done and how much time you will have to do it. You can get a lot more done when you have a schedule sitting in front of you as it is a reminder of what needs to be done.

  1. Tip number two is something that is the most important part in my opinion! People think that working from home automatically means you get to work where you want or when you want, but it isn’t completely true. To have a good business, you have to set up healthy work habits but also have a good work-life balance which can be really challenging at first.

  2. Great tips. I worked from home before and it was great! I really miss this type of arrangement versus going into an office every day and looking at the same troublesome individuals. My next step is to work for myself. There is nothing like self-employment. I will definitely use these tips when I finally open my business.
