It’s back! For some McDonald’s lovers it is the most wonderful time of the year. That’s right, it’s McRib time! Despite the cult following that this little barbeque fast food treat has, a photo that has been circulating around the internet has been turning some people off from their beloved sandwiches.
The photo in question came from a user of Reddit and depicts what the slabs of meat look like when they are still frozen. They are gray, flat, and look nothing at all like the tangy BBQ treat that many around the country enjoy. But was the photos that caused a stir on the net even real?
A McDonald’s representative stated that yes, that is what the McRib looks like when it is frozen. This is not a new practice for fast food restaurants. Almost all of the fast food joints flash freeze their meat in order to lock in the taste and the freshness. The rep from McDonald’s says that they use pork shoulder which is a better cut of pork and press it into the iconic McRib shape so that it looks more like ribs. Sorry McDonald’s, you aren’t fooling anyone with their shape!
While McDonald’s feels that the McRib is fine the way it is and is a meaty treat for all, but one look at the nutritional information on this little sandwich makes you wonder why so many people actually eat it. The sandwich is not that big but packs in a whopping 500 calories, 890 milligrams of sodium, and 10 grams of saturated fat. That is a fourth of a 2,000 calorie diet allowance and almost all of your sodium allowance for the day.
