Every time that you go to the dentist, you wait for them to say “You aren’t flossing enough” because that is what they always say. One dentist is now speaking out and telling you to throw the floss away because it is doing more harm than good.
Dr. Reid Winick is a licensed dentist who says that flossing will hurt more than help. He explains that if you have food stuck in your teeth, yes the floss will help to get rid of the food, but what you don’t see is that the floss is also brushing bad bacteria all over your gums at the same time. Pathogenic bacteria is found in our mouths and can cause serious health issues to the gums and teeth. It comes from the carbs and simple sugars that we ingest daily. When you rub the floss back and forth across your gums all you are doing is rubbing that bacteria right in there.
The pathogenic bacteria grows and can multiply in pockets under our gums where it rests. These little pockets are formed as plaque builds on your teeth over the years. As time goes on, the bacteria can get into your blood stream and cause chronic inflammation. It can also cause preterm labor, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and even some cancers like breast cancer. In order to get rid of this bacteria, you must first find out if it’s even there, and if it is found to be in your gums, you must see a dentist as they are the only ones that can accurately clear it out. Once you have this done you must use a tool such as an oral irrigator to keep the pockets clean.
The irrigator uses a gentle pressurized stream of water and blasts out whatever is in the pockets of your gums. It is an easy and effective way to keep them clean that won’t cause pain or any damage to the gum lining.
