A Deadly Disease Made Venus Williams Decide to Go Vegan

Some of us are raised on unhealthy foods and poor eating habits.  This can cause a series of illnesses and put us on our death beds.   Thinking outside the box is the way to overcome some of these issues, and “sistuhs” are starting to learn to rethink the food we put into our bodies.  Venus Williams, one of the most respected and beloved tennis players on the planet, is sharing her understanding of health with other black women around the world, and says that turning vegan played a role in possibly saving her life.

Sometimes when the doctors can’t do anything about an issue, it’s time to search for other health remedies.  It’s not enough to just pray that you’re going to get better, you have to do DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

BlackDoctor.org lays it out:

Celebrity athlete Venus Williams was diagnosed with an incurable immune system disorder this past summer that caused her to reconsider her eating habits.

Through the recommendation of her sister, Serena, Venus began looking into holistic treatments for Sjogren’s Syndrome, which has no conventional remedies. The seven-time Grand Slam winner decided to give up meat and dairy opting for a raw, vegan diet to help manage her symptoms. Her sister Serena Williams has joined her and both tennis players have become role models for women who want to fully embrace alternative diets for health.

The painful and debilitating symptoms of Sjogren’s caused her to cancel her second U.S. Open match, after winning the first back in August of 2011, and most recently the 2012 Australian Open.

She told People magazine that the diagnosis was a relief after years of going to doctors without results. ‘I would go to the doctor and start crying. I couldn’t help it. I just want a chance to play on the same field as other people, I want to feel normal, but as frightening as the diagnosis was, it was also a relief.’

Making preserving and improving health and fitness levels a New Year’s resolution is a noble goal for both men and women. However, if the William sisters use their collective star celebs power wisely as fit and trim celebrity athletes in the new year, they stand to help not only the African-American community who looks up to them as fashion icons and role models but also to help promote the health of all women.

  1. Praise God!! He is sooo good!! He has a remedy when doctors do not!! Thank you for motivating me to do even better!! I to had to stop working because I have fibromyalgia, very painful!! The doctors had me on so many medicines, and still the pain has been great, so I started researching, and praying to God about how I could help myself! And research determined that meat eating and caffeine, and sugar and stress makes the pain worse. The weight gain with the meds was unreal! So I stopped eating the meat about 2 1/2 years ago, and I have lost over sixty pounds!! I was raised a vegetarian, so I already knew the benefits of right eating. I'm working on being a vegan!!
