Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the U.S. House has vowed that his party will work diligently to financially destabilize one of the biggest health care and birth control providers for women in America.
According to Mother Jones, Ryan (R-Wis.) said at a news conference on Thursday (January 5th) that the Republican party will move toward defunding Planned Parenthood once the Trump Administration takes over. This is a goal that the GOP has been moving toward achieving for quite some time.
Becca Andrews, the assistant editor for MotherJones.com wrote the following about Ryan’s remarks in an online article, which her media source published not long after Ryan made the news conference statements about his political party’s plans:
“[Ryan’s] remarks come two days after a Republican-led House investigative panel released a report that recommended the health care provider be defunded. The investigative panel—created to examine allegations that Planned Parenthood was selling fetal tissue for profit—was then disbanded, because it was not reauthorized for a new Congress. Planned Parenthood was never found guilty of any wrongdoing at the state or federal level, despite multiple GOP-led investigations.” (MotherJones.com).
In a swift response to Ryan’s announcement, a prominent figure within the Democratic party on Capitol Hill shot back and shared her strong position, which opposes the Republican goal of organizing the end of a longtime source of health care and birth control for women in America.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the following in a statement about Ryan’s announcement:
“I just would like to speak individually to women across America: This is about respect for you, for your judgment about your personal decisions in terms of your reproductive needs, the size and timing of your family or the rest, not to be determined by the insurance company or by the Republican ideological right-wing caucus in the House of Representatives.”
Planned Parenthood has a very strong lobbying force surrounding it and the Democratic party has key figures within it who will help the organization lodge a grind-it-out battle with Ryan, the Trump Administration, and all Republican figures who are squarely focused on achieving this controversial political goal.
